There is a lot of information written about getting backlinks to your website. In this post I will outline 3 ways that work very well. A quick and easy way, a more involved way and the best, but more in-depth way. There are of course, many different ways to get backlinks to your site. For this post however, I am going to focus on 3 methods outlined below.
Before we delve into the process of getting backlinks, lets be clear on what the term backlink means. It is the process of obtaining a link from another website or blog. Effectively, that backlink is a vote
(a thumbs up). Google will see it as such and place a value level on each
one you get and rank it accordingly.
When you see a website that consistently ranks highly in the search engines. It is almost a certainty, that website is an authoritative site with lots of strong backlinks pointing to it. Therefore, if you want high rankings, you need to mimic what the big sites do.
When you start your backlinking campaign, it is important the website or blog that links back to you, has a higher page rank than your own. Google will give a link from a high page ranked site more value. They see it as an importance link from an authority site. The importance of page rank aside, it is not the only consideration. Websites with lower page rank, but have lots of traffic, good visitor engagement, and strong social followings should not be ignored.
Two very important factors you need to bare in mind are:- (1) where you get your links from and (2) the timing of getting those links. Google likes everything to be "organic", which means significant changes that will improve your site's ranking. Should occur naturally over a period of weeks or months.

Most website owners outsource the task because of time constraints. This is not surprising as there are dozens of suppliers selling backlinks as a service. Before you decide to take that easy road, let me give you a word of advice. DO NOT EVER "buy" backlinks. Google will know they are bought and they hate that particular marketing strategy. They can track where the links come form. The search engines have very complicated "behind the scenes" metrics and tracking algorithms. They are design to track all the important data from your website. Those metrics help to decide how to list your website in the search engine results pages (SERPs). As well as indexing your web pages. If you are buying backlinks, believe me when I say, they will know.
Another thing to watch for is services offering hundreds of links for what might appear to be pennies. If Google sees a sudden infusion of links to your site, it is possible for you to get penalized. Hundreds of backlinks suddenly pointing to your site is suspicious. To get that many at one time, usually means they are low quality links. Most unrelated to your niche market, or poorly created forum sites, built for the sole purpose of selling backlinks to site owners.
Using a bulk backlink strategy will do more harm than good. It may also alert the search engines that your website's main purpose is to get ranked and not to provide value to your visitors. A more natural sequence would be backlinks pointing to your site, a few at a time, over a specific period of time.
Since a good, strong backlink is really a "vote" for your website. It is imperative that you find a way to get ones that are of good quality and are openly available. In truth, there are more than a few acceptable SEO methods of getting backlinks to your site. Today I'm going to cover just three.

1. The Quick & Easy Way.

A blog comment is one place to get a quick backlink. Lots of bloggers will welcome your comments if it is relevant and adds value to the post. In many cases you can leave a link pointing back to your website. Don't pick out random blogs, choose a niche that interests you, and one that is related to your own. Don't write a blatant ad, in the hope of pumping up your own product or service. The blogger will spot it, and quite rightly delete it.
I've read that commenting on blogs as a backlink strategy is a waste of time. I disagree! When you comment on a blog, it does add value to the blogger. It shows the search engines a level of visitor engagement and solidifies the bloggers' writing efforts. As well as giving you a quick backlink to your site.
Blog commenting backlinks are quite lightweight, they count but, are not authoritative. Some are do-follow links, some are no-follow links. SEMRush gives a full explanation on do-follow & no-follow links (read here for a full explaination). In any case, you don't want to focus too heavily on blog comments as your main backlink strategy. Treat it as an occasional task, and only comment if you've read the article. Always respect the bloggers' efforts and their website.

2. The Sharing Method.

Sharing interesting information is a little more involved but can be very effective. It involves publishing a short "guide or useful "information sheet". Usually about a topic you're knowledgeable in. You can produce a PowerPoint tutorial or even a short e-book. Once completed, you can publish it on various document sharing platforms. such as Amazon Kindle, freebooks.com or slideshare.com.
Another way to sharing information is to send copies of your work to niche related websites and blog owners and ask for their opinion. Some owners will share their opinions and be more than happy to exchange views and discuss the content. If they like your content, they may even share it with their readers and subscriber list.
If you have social media accounts such as Twitter, Facebook and the like. Share any new and interesting content with your followers and fans. Tell them what new information you've created and send them to your site to find out more. Encourage them to share it or like it or comment. If you don't have any social media accounts, think about opening some.
One of the fun ways of sharing your content is via video. People love to watch videos, so if you create something interesting and engaging. Make YouTube your first stop! The NO.1 video sharing site should at the top of your list. There are other video sharing site you can also upload a videos to. Although none are as large or as popular as YouTube, it's still good to spread your content among a variety of video sharing platforms. Dailymotion, Vimeo and Veoh are just a few.
This sharing method a is very good strategy for increasing brand awareness, followers and fans. We all love to talk about something interesting we've seen or read. Very often we share that experience with friends, family and co-workers. When it's shared online, it tends to happen quite fast.
There are dozens of document sharing sites around. Just Google for the top five or top ten of them and you will have a list to choose from.

3. The Best Way To Get Backlinks To Your Website.

This is the toughest, but most powerful way to get a strong backlink to your site. It involves reaching out to high ranking websites and blogs, then asking them for a backlink to your website. You need to approach website owners in the right way and not automatically expect a yes from all of them. Often called the "out-reach method", or "guest posting", it is the best strategy used by many pro-bloggers and website owners.
If you are successful in gaining a backlink from an authoritative website, it can send some serious link juice to your own site. More than that, it will be a strong link for the search engines to track and rank you accordingly. That said, you will need more than one link, so this method can take several months to master. It is also likely to take several months for these links to have a positive effect on your site's rankings. Therefore, you need to be both consistent and patient.

This is the Process - Follow These Steps.

There are several ways to approach this backlink strategy used by many different SEO Experts. I'm going to outline a simple, non-complicated way.
  1. Have a spread sheet or notepad opened so that you can create your own contact list.
  2. Make a list of niche markets related, but not directly the same as your own. For instance, if you have a cooking recipe site, you could target kitchen ware sites, kitchen fitters, home craft type websites etc.
  3. Do a Google search for blogs that accept guest posts for the niche markets you found. Transfer that list of eligible sites into your spread sheet.
  4. Visit each website and have a good look around the site. Read a few articles and get the general feel of it. Then, find the contact email, and add their email address next to the site.

The Contact Stage.

  1. Send a non pushy, polite email - asking if you could write a topic related article for their website. In this email, ask the site owner for an author credit with an anchor text link back to your website.
  2. Use an email heading something like this - Example: [Owner's Name], "May I write a guest post for your website?", or something along those lines.
  3. Introduce yourself - In the body of the email, explain who you are, what you do and give your website link. Be polite, be professional and highlight something interesting you noticed about their blog, mention how much you enjoyed reading a post. (You did read/visit their site right?).
  4. Create your own email template - If you create a ready-made email template, it can be adjusted slightly to fit each site owner and save time. Don't use BCC (blind copy) to send out multiple emails. Every website is different and your email provider may see it as spam. Not to the embarrassment of addressing an email to the owner of eblog dot com. When the body of the email clearly says fblog dot com.
  5. You may need to send quite a lot of emails before you get a response. Therefore, aim to send 5-7 emails a day.

The Response Stage.

  1. When you get a yes response, reply back with a thank you. Then ask if they have a specific subject they would like you to write about. Doing this will help you come up with a list of subject titles for future articles.
  2. Be prepared to have one or two email conversations. This doesn't always happen but some site owners ask questions about what you intend to write about.
  3. Write an article of at least 500 words. Some site owners will tell you if they have a minimum word count the want, so be prepared to write up 600 - 1000 word articles. This may seem long but if you're writing about subjects within your own niche, it will be easier than you think.
  4. Send your complete article to the owner, make sure you point out what keyword or key phrase you want as an anchor text link back to your website.
Follow this strategy for at least 6 months so that you get a good idea of the feedback rate. If you spend 5-10 minutes a day, Monday to Friday and send 5 emails. You will have at least 25 emails out there. If you send 7 a day that's 35. Remember;
- You already have a lists of site owners open to accepting guest posts, with their contact details. - You already have your email template. Just copy & paste the corresponding email & site details into the "compose" area of your email and press send. It won't take more than a minute or two to send one email.
Some website owners openly offer guest posting opportunities. The larger the site, the more welcoming the owner could be to get content from others. This is because larger authoritative site usually publish content at least 1-3 times a week.
Many site owners will welcome useful content for their readers. Write an article that has some value to their readership. One that is topic related, well written with good grammar, spelling and punctuation.

What if I don't have the time to write dozens of articles?

This is the most common question most people asked. My advice would be to outsource your article writing if you don't have the time. Finding a good article writer can be tricky, although there are hundreds around. You could turn to Google to find the top 20 article writing services. I am reluctant to suggest any, simple because I haven't used many with any great success myself. I write my own stuff and one of my co-workers also write. For me, that it's for the moment, but here's a few tips!
1. Check out the reputation of the writing service, there are freelance sites where you can find dozens of writers. Reputable freelance sites I know and used are: Freelancer.com & Upwork.com (formerly Elance & oDesk). There are many more available, so just Google it.
2. Ask to see samples of their work & where they have been published.
3. If you go via a freelance site, then you will be able to read feedback and reviews, which will give you a good idea of the quality.

Conclusion.

Methods 2 & 3 of getting backlinks will take more time and effort than the first method. However, if you use all three methods over a significant period of time, you will notice the positive results. These strategies will help your website get recognized on the Net. They will be most effective if you use them consistently for at least six consecutive months or more. Then, every couple of months or so, repeat the process to increase the link count to your site.
Search engines will notice the increased links, activity and interest your website will get. If you continue to add quality backlinks to your site, this will ultimately lead to higher search listings. Which should naturally drive more traffic to your site, help you gain more social followers, and increase brand awareness.
I know this process is a lot of hard work but hard work usually pays dividends. If you really don't have the time to do it yourself, you could achieve the same results, probably quicker with a DFY (Done For You) website ranking service.
